Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Wednesday, Nov. 30: At 10:47 am an officer was requested to check on a single vehicle property damage accident at R Ave and Highway 30 east of Jefferson until the deputy could arrive. The deputy investigated the accident. At 11:16 am administration at Greene County Middle School requested an officer to view video of an event between a student and a teacher. The student’s parent believes the child was pushed and agreed to let an officer determine what had occurred. The school proposed this to the parent to remain transparent, but to maintain privacy and control over their camera system throughout the district. The officer will review the footage and follow up with the parent.
At 2:20 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the gravel parking lot north of Linduska Field at the high school. A 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix, owned by Sheri Anthofer and operated by Mitchell Anthofer of Jefferson, struck a parked 2001 Cadillac Seville owned by Kimberly Tasler of Jefferson while the driver was backing in the lot. Only minor damages occurred to each vehicle. No citation was issued due to the accident occurring on private property, outside of the roadway.
Tuesday, Nov. 29: At 8:21 am staff at Kum & Go reported a gas drive-off. The officer was provided video of the event. The officer has developed a suspect and is investigating. At 3:15 pm staff at Peony Restaurant reported a theft and criminal mischief that had occurred on Nov. 26. A customer did not pay for their meal and defaced the restroom before leaving. The officer has a suspect and is investigating the event. At 10:04 pm a complainant reported finding damage to her 2007 Chevy Equinox after it had been parked at Dollar General. The vehicle suffered a reported $1,500 in damage to a rear door.
Monday, Nov. 28: At 9 am a complainant reported the theft of a Christmas decoration from the yard in the 300 block of E. Park St. At 10:19 a complainant reported a stray black lab in the 500 block of W. Adams St. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility. At 2:20 pm a female reported being habitually chased as she walks her dog on the bike trail by a dog in the 500 block of Garfield St. The officer is investigating. At 7:55 pm a complainant reported hearing five gunshots west of the 300 block of S. Cedar St. The officer could not locate anything in the area.
Sunday, Nov. 27: At 1:35 am a complainant reported a couple had been living in his garage in the 600 block of S. Cedar St. The couple had moved out recently and the owner had located possible stolen property and drug paraphernalia in his garage. The officer seized the items and is investigating. At 2:35 am several callers advised of possible gunshots in the area of the 300 block of S. West St. The officer did not locate the cause of the noises. At 12:58 pm a complainant advised of a small cat stuck in a tree in the 400 block of W. Russell St. The officer made contact with a male subject at the residence, who advised he would get the cat and demanded the officer leave his property.
Saturday, Nov. 26: At 12:34 pm a complainant reported a stray dog in the 400 block of N. Cedar St. The officer did not locate the animal. At 5:56 pm a resident reported a squirrel in his basement at a residence in the 600 block of S. Locust St. The officer could not locate the animal.
Friday, Nov. 25: At 7:21 am a resident advised of a deceased deer in the roadway in the 1300 block of W. Lincoln Way. The officer removed the deer from the roadway. At 3:06 pm a complainant reported a theft from her unlocked vehicle parked in the 600 block of S. Chestnut St. A wallet, cigarettes and a lighter had been removed from the vehicle. At 7:32 pm a complainant reported the theft of outside lighting from a residence in the 500 block of N. Oak St.
Thursday, Nov. 24: At 12:35 pm a complainant reported the theft of his checkbook from a residence in the 600 block of S. Cedar St.
Wednesday, Nov. 23: At 4:40 pm an officer investigated a backing accident that had occurred in the 100 block of W. State St. Matthew Millard of Indianola was in line for the Home State Bank drive-up driving a 2006 Honda Pilot. Jory Joy of Scranton backed into the Millard vehicle. Joy was cited for unsafe backing upon a highway. Joy’s 2011 Ford F150 pickup truck vehicle suffered $800 in damages to the rear and the Millard vehicle had a reported $2,000 in damage to the front end.
Tuesday, Nov. 22: At 6:56 am Jennifer Brown reported a deer had run into the side of her vehicle while driving near Mulberry and Highway 30. The deer was uninjured and fled the area. Brown’s 2011 Ford Taurus suffered an estimated $1,000 in damages. At 10:53 am staff at Kum & Go reported a gas drive off that occurred at 6 pm the previous day. The officer was provided with a vehicle and suspect description. The male left without paying for $33.66 in fuel. At 11:57 pm a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier advised of two dogs jumping in and out of an open window at a residence in the 400 block of N. Vine St. The officer contacted the animal owner, who came home and secured the dogs inside the residence. At 9:57 pm an officer arrested Brandon Michael Mitchell, 24, of Jefferson on an outstanding Greene County arrest warrant for a probation violation*.
Monday, Nov. 21: The Department of Human Services requested assistance from an officer in attempting to locate a female who may be in Jefferson. The female had left a treatment facility without permission. The female was later located by a deputy in Paton. At 9:27 am an officer was requested at a residence in the 600 block of S. Locust St. for a 2-year-old who had locked himself in the bathroom. The officer was able to gain entry to the bathroom. The child was uninjured. At 10:54 am an officer was requested to provide extra patrol at the courthouse during a hearing for the extension of a protective order. At 6:57 pm an officer investigated a car-deer accident at Highway 30 and Grimmell Road. Douglas Thompson of Boone was eastbound driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck when he struck a deer. The officer reported $2,000 in damage to the Thompson vehicle. At 10:30 pm a JPD officer was requested by a deputy to respond to a one vehicle property damage accident on County Road E-53 near Jordan Ave west of Jefferson. The officer conducted traffic control and the accident was covered by the sheriff’s office.
Sunday, Nov. 20: At 12:56 pm a resident turned in a wallet she had located in her yard in the 700 block of S. Vine St. The officer contacted the subject from Vinton, who advised he had been in town for the weekend visiting family and the wallet was removed from his vehicle overnight. There was a small amount of cash missing from the wallet. At 2:57 pm an officer responded to a one vehicle personal injury accident at Highway 30 and Flack Ave west of Highway 4. Myron Lovell Brown of Jefferson was eastbound on Highway 30 driving a 2004 Buick LeSabre. Brown did not slow down as he travelled through the intersections of Highways 30 and 4. He struck the stop sign and the intersection and continued eastbound, then entered the south ditch just west of Flack Ave. The vehicle struck an embankment and rolled. Brown and a passenger were transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS. The Jefferson fire department assisted at the scene and the Iowa State Patrol was contacted to conduct the investigation. At 5:15 pm an officer assisted the Jefferson fire department with a reported electrical fire in a garage at 620 S. Olive St. No damage occurred and the home owner was advised to contact an electrician to correct the issue before turning the power back on to the garage. At 10 pm a complainant requested an officer at a residence in the 700 block of N. Cedar St for a reported domestic abuse assault that had occurred. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of William Steven McClure on charges of domestic abuse assault impeding air/blood flow (aggravated misdemeanor) and obstruction of emergency communication (simple misdemeanor)*. ******* An investigation into a possible violation of a protective order has been completed. Officers were called to the Wild Rose Casino on Nov. 15 for the reported violation. After an investigation arrest warrants have been requested for Patrick Michael Kennedy, 32, and Amelia Marie Kennedy, 32, both of Jefferson for violation of a protective order (simple misdemeanor)*. ******* An officer has requested an arrest warrant for Kristen Abbie Langfitt, 21, of Dana for forgery (class D felony)* after the conclusion of an investigation that began Aug. 10. A complainant from Urbandale reported one of his checks on a Wells Fargo account had been issued to a female from Dana in the amount of $1,213. The officer learned the check in question had been deposited into the female’s account at Home State Bank in Jefferson, via mobile phone deposit. The female’s cellular phone records show she had made the deposit on June 13.
Saturday, Nov. 19: At 9:51 am an officer investigated a two vehicle property damage accident at N. Maple and W. Washington St. Tim Waters of Jefferson was travelling northbound on Maple St in his 2000 Chevy Silverado. Donna Exline of Chariton was eastbound on Washington St driving a 1992 Ford F-150 pickup truck. In the intersection Exline’s vehicle struck Waters’ vehicle. Both vehicles suffered extensive damages. Exline was cited for fail to yield to vehicle on right. At 10:33 am a complainant brought a dog to the LEC she had found running near the library. The animal’s owner was contacted and the animal was returned with a verbal warning for animal at large prohibited. At 11:34 a complainant reported two dogs running freely in the area of Lincoln Way and Vine St. The officer did not locate the animals. At 5:45 pm an officer investigated a backing accident in the 100 block of W. Wilcoxway. A 2011 Chevy Camaro owned by James Cameron Copeland of Des Moines was legally parked on the street. Kurt Hadley of Jefferson backed his 1999 Chevy S-10 into the Copeland vehicle. The Hadley vehicle suffered minimal damage, while the Copeland vehicle had a reported $2,000 in damages. Hadley was cited for unsafe backing upon a highway.
Friday, Nov. 18: At 1:26 pm management at The Printer’s Box requested an officer for a reported shoplifting. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Jennifer Marie Ashby, 44, of Jefferson for public intoxication and interference with official acts*, both simple misdemeanors. At 6:11 pm a complainant reported a cat had been struck by a vehicle in the 200 block of N. Locust St. The officer dispatched the injured cat and disposed of it.
Thursday, Nov. 17: At 1:48 pm Jane Parker reported her vehicle had been struck while parked at Fareway. Parker noticed the damage when returning to the vehicle after shopping. Parker’s 2005 Chevrolet Silverado suffered an estimated $200 in damage. The officer is investigating. At 2:50 pm a complainant reported $10 worth of plates and silverware missing from a residence in the 300 block of S. Grimmell Road after two roommates had recently moved out. The officer is investigating. At 6:28 pm an officer removed a deceased dog from the roadway in the 1500 block of W. Lincoln Way. A short time later the animal’s owner called looking for his dog. The officer returned the deceased animal to its owner for burial. At 10:02 pm a complainant reported a missing live trap from 1000 W. Adams St. Lentz was loaned the trap from the JPD to capture stray cats in the complex. She provided the officer with a suspect. The officer is investigating.
Wednesday, Nov. 16: At 12:11 am a complainant reported a possible harassment occurring at a residence in the 500 block of E. Monroe St. ******* An investigation that began on Oct. 30 at Wild Rose Casino has been completed by the officer. A female walked away from an ATM in the casino and left her debit card in the ATM. The card was removed by another patron. The officer has applied for an arrest warrant for Jason Dale Charlet, 44, of Minburn for theft- fifth degree.* ******* On Oct. 25 an officer started an investigation into a forgery of checks from a deceased man’s bank account. A male suspect had written numerous checks in surrounding counties on his deceased father’s bank account. The officer began collaborating information with surrounding agencies. The officer was advised the male had written four checks in Greene County on July 3. Two checks were written at Casey’s General Store (N. Elm St) in Jefferson and two checks were written at the Casey’s General Store in Scranton. The officer completed the investigation and has applied for arrest warrants for Carl Allen Janssen, 30, of Denison for four counts of forgery (class D felony) and ongoing criminal conduct (class B felony)*.
Tuesday, Nov. 15: At 2:34 pm Wild Rose Casino security staff advised of a possible violation of a no contact order. The officer spoke to the male party involved and he denied the contact with the protected female. The officer will review video and future charges are pending in the matter. At 6 pm a female dropped off a sick white kitten at the LEC that she had found on the side of the road.
Monday, Nov. 14: At 5:37 am a complainant called in a possible intoxicated driver on Highway 30 approaching Jefferson from the east. The officer located the reported vehicle and performed a traffic stop after witnessing the vehicle cross the center line three times in a short period of time. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Alex Cihera Frey, 31, of Madrid for operating while intoxicated- first offense (serious misdemeanor)*. Frey was also issued a citation for failure to yield half the roadway. At 12:34 pm staff at the Jefferson Veterinary Clinic advised of a dog running freely in the area of 210 S. Wilson. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility. At 4:12 pm an officer removed a cat from a tree for a resident in the 400 block of W. Russell St.
Sunday, Nov. 13: At 12:01 am an officer was requested at Wild Rose Casino at for a reported theft. The officer arrived and learned a female customer had stepped away from her gaming machine momentarily to assist a friend with a medical issue. The female returned and found that her $150 had been cashed out from her machine. The casino provided the officer with video of a male removing the money from the machine. The officer located Troy Angelo McGee, 48, of Fort Dodge and arrested him for theft- fifth degree*. At 12:11 am a complainant requested officers at a residence in the 600 block of S. Mulberry St for a domestic assault complaint. The officer arrived and spoke with the couple at the residence. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Richard Lee Norton Jr, 47, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault- third or subsequent offence (Class D felony)*. At 2:09 pm Bayllie Flinn reported a backing accident occurring at Ever Greene Ridge. An elderly female had slightly tapped Flinn’s vehicle and left the area. The officer is investigating. At 3:29 pm a complainant reported criminal mischief at a residence in the 300 block of W. Reed St. A window at the residence had been broken. At 3:35 pm a complainant reported his juvenile son had been bitten by a neighbor’s dog in the 600 block of W. Lincoln Way. The officer made contact with the animal and its owner. The dog was placed in 10-day quarantine per state law and must leave the city of Jefferson afterwards. At 7:42 pm a complainant advised of a dog running loose in the 300 block of E. Vest St. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility.
Saturday, Nov. 12: At 2:57 pm staff at Wild Rose Casino advised a customer had a counterfeit $10 bill. The officer interviewed the female from the Des Moines area and believes she received the bill in change from that area. She is not suspected of knowing the bill was counterfeit.
Friday, Nov. 11: At 6:42 pm an officer investigated a suicide by gunshot at a residence in the 100 block of E. Washington St.
Thursday, Nov. 10: At 1:59 pm a complainant reported the theft of a generator from a residence in the 200 block of E. Perry St. At 8:41 pm a complainant reported the theft of two ordered packages from his porch in the 1400 block of Southfield Drive.
Wednesday, Nov. 9: At 1:45 pm an officer arrested James Alexander Pena, 18, of Jefferson on an outstanding JPD arrest warrant for theft- fifth degree (simple misdemeanor)*. The arrest warrant was issued for a reported theft of alcohol from Hy-Vee on Oct. 31. ****** An investigation into the theft of alcohol from Hy-Vee on Oct. 24 has been completed by the officer. The officer has identified the subject in the provided video and has requested a juvenile arrest warrant for a 16-year-old male juvenile from Ankeny. The arrest warrant is for theft- fourth degree (serious misdemeanor)*.
Tuesday, Nov. 8: At 6:27 am a complainant reported seeing a mountain lion in her yard in the 1200 block of W. Lincoln Way. At 6:40 pm a resident captures a stray dog in the 300 block of S. Grimmell Rd. An officer placed the dog in the animal holding facility. At 7:44 pm a complainant reported his juvenile son had been bitten several times by a stray dog in their yard in the 600 block of W. Lincoln Way. The animal had left the area after biting the juvenile. The dog was described as being medium-sized and black/gray/white. The officer checked the area for the dog while the child received medical attention. After speaking with numerous residents in the area, the animal is still unknown at this time. At 11:15 pm officers received information about a male and female with a no contact order in effect gambling together at Wild Rose Casino. The officer arrived at the casino and located the couple inside. Patrick Michael Kennedy, 32, and Brittany Kay Smith, 29, both of Jefferson were arrested and charged with violation of a protective order (simple misdemeanor)*.
Monday, Nov. 7: At 5:45 pm staff at Greene County Medical Center called and advised that someone was burning leaves in the area of the 1000 block of W. Lincoln Way and patients with asthma were complaining. The officer searched the area, but did not locate anyone burning in the area. At 5:52 pm a complainant reported the theft of prescription medications from a vehicle in the 100 block of E. Washington St. ******* An officer has finished an investigation that began Nov 2at the Sparky’s One Stop. Sparky’s reported that an employee who was responsible to make a bank deposit had not done so. The officer’s investigation has led to the application for an arrest warrant for Danielle Jean Woodard, 36, of Jefferson for theft- second degree (Class D felony)*.
Sunday, Nov. 6: At 10:36 am a resident captured a stray dog in the 300 block of W. Lincoln Way. The officer placed the animal in the animal holding facility. ****** An arrest warrant has been requested for James Alexander Pena, 18, of Jefferson for theft- fifth degree (simple misdemeanor)*. The requested warrant is for the theft of alcohol from Hy-Vee on Oct. 29.
Saturday, Nov. 5: A US Postal Service employee turned a wallet into the LEC that was found in the 400 block of E. Madison St. The officer contacted the wallet’s owner and learned it had been taken during a car burglary, which had occurred in that block. The victim reported a small amount of cash had been removed from the wallet.
Friday, Nov. 4: At 5:47 pm staff at Oly’s Corner reported a gas drive off. At 7:09 pm a complainant reported male juveniles on the the railing of the overpass in the 800 block of N. Elm St. The officer did not locate the subjects in the area.
Thursday, Nov. 3: At 7:57 am a complainant advised of a stray dog in the 200 block of N. Wilson. The officer placed the stray in the animal holding facility.
Wednesday, Nov. 2: At 9:34 am staff at Kum & Go reported a male leaving without paying for $5.05 in fuel. At 2:05 pm staff at Sparky’s One Stop requested an officer for an employee theft. It was reported that an employee did not make a bank deposit of $1893.62, but had returned the empty bank bag to the business. The officer is investigating. At 2:57 pm an officer was advised of a female driving near the post office whose driving privileges are barred. The officer performed a traffic stop with the vehicle in the 100 block of W. Harrison St. Katelin Rae Lowmiller, 25, of Jefferson was arrested and charged with driving while barred (aggravated misdemeanor)*. At 5:27 pm a complainant reported the theft of an iPad from a residence in the 900 block of W. State St. At 5:55 pm a complainant reported a burglary that had occurred between Oct 1-30 at a residence in the 200 block of E. Perry St. The complainant reported numerous items taken from the residence. The officer is investigating. At 7:30 pm a complainant reported harassment that had occurred Oct. 15 at a residence in the 300 block of N. Oak St. The officer is investigating. ******* An officer has finished an investigation that began on Sept. 30. A complainant reported a male subject had used her debit card to obtain cash from an ATM and gain to purchase items at Kum & Go. After obtaining video footage of both events, the officer has requested arrest warrants for Sean Michael Allen Pollard, 27, of Jefferson for two counts of forgery (Class D felony)*.
Tuesday, Nov. 1: At 9:10 am an officer was requested at the Greene County High School for a driving complaint. The officer learned a driver had been doing “donuts” in the gravel parking lot. The officer is investigating and traffic charges are pending at this time. At 3:27 pm an officer took a complaint at a residence in the 600 block of S. Maple St for a stolen/missing satellite TV box. At 5:44 pm a caller advised of a vehicle squealing its tires in the area of the 200 block of E. Vest St. The officer did not locate the vehicle. At 6:38 pm a complainant advised of a careless driver heading towards Jefferson on Highway 30. The officer did not locate the reported vehicle.
